I know there are lots of things we can do to calm ourselves; walks in nature, long baths, yoga and meditation.. but today I am going to talk about our biggest friend and also what I think might also be something less positive than that. Our smartphone...
Checking our phone for most people has become like a physical tic, a compulsion, an unstoppable urge, a little treat, a distraction. But I think it really messes with our head.
i do it too
When I sit and meditate, sometimes I find a perfectly still and blissful place. It feels better than anything I can get from the internet. But the more I fiddle with my phone at other times of the day, the less likely it is that the space opens up, that the chatter diminishes.
it can be different
I know that this post may seem so unrealistic to you, but it's a topic I feel so passionately about. We are all in it together. We are all normalising this way of being. We expect immediacy and then people expect it of us.
how do we change?
Charge your phone outside your bedroom
Swap your phone for an alarm clock
Delete one app that you use quite a lot
Leave your phone in your bag when you meet a friend - even when they go to the loo!
Try not to make your phone the first thing you reach for in the morning
These small shifts, this mindfulness around your phone may have surprising benefits! You may notice the things, people and situations around you more. You may realise that you don't need to be up-to-date with everything and everyone all of the time - and that it's quite nice not to be. You might feel calmer.
